Panjiayuan Antique Market
Chaoyang, Beijing
Beijing's sprawling weekend flea market: jade, calligraphy, Mao memorabilia, and everything in between.
Panjiayuan is where Beijing's old things go to be rebought: acres of jade, porcelain, furniture, old photographs, and Mao-era propaganda art. Much is reproduction - that is part of the fun - but the hunt is the point.
Go on a weekend morning when it is busiest, and bargain hard. Sellers expect it, and a third of the asking price is a fair starting point.
Best for: The greatest people-watching and treasure hunt in Beijing.
