Giant Panda Breeding Base
Chenghua, Chengdu
See dozens of giant pandas up close - including cubs - in a bamboo forest research base.
The panda base is a conservation research facility that happens to be the most charming morning in China. Pandas eat breakfast between 8:00 and 10:00, which is exactly when you should be there: cubs tumble, adults munch bamboo with existential calm, and the crowds are still thin.
An English-speaking guide is worth the modest fee. The base is 30 minutes from central Chengdu by taxi.
Best for: The morning that makes the whole trip worth it.
