The museum of yunjin - the 'cloud brocade' so fine two weavers had to work one loom - with weavers at work and silk for sale.

Yunjin ('cloud brocade') was the imperial silk of Nanjing, a weave so complex that a single panel required two weavers and a child coordinator on one loom. The museum keeps the craft alive with working demonstrations, and the patterned silk on the looms glows like nothing else made in China.

Beyond the exhibits, the shop sells scarves, panels, and accessories in genuine yunjin - expensive, but a real piece of the Ming dynasty's most coveted textile. The museum is quiet, dignified, and one of the few places where visitors can watch a fabric that outlived the emperors who wore it.

Best for: The imperial weave so fine it took two weavers.
