Laoshan is where Taoist immortals were said to brew elixirs - a 1,100-meter mountain that plunges into the Yellow Sea, so the coastal trails offer ocean on one side and cloud forests on the other. Its Taoist temples have sheltered pilgrims for 2,000 years.

Take the cable car up and walk down, following the coastal ridge trail. Spring azaleas and sea mist make it otherworldly. Allow a full day; it is 40 minutes from central Qingdao.

Best for: A sacred Taoist peak rising from the Yellow Sea.
