Quanzhou is the birthplace of Chinese string puppetry, and the city's troupe is the living standard-bearer: a UNESCO-recognized tradition where a single master can animate thirty strings on one puppet. The performances - opera scenes, legends, and comic sketches - are staged regularly in the old city.
