Nanshan Cultural Zone
Sanya, Sanya
A 108-meter Guanyin statue rising from the sea - one of the tallest statues on earth.
Nanshan is a Buddhist cultural park built around a colossal white Guanyin that stands in the sea, her head above the clouds on a good day. It is one of the tallest statues in the world, and the approach - across a bridge over open water - is designed to awe.
Allow half a day: the park is enormous, with temple halls, gardens, and a vegetarian restaurant that is famously good. The statue is best photographed from the ferry approach.
Best for: A 108-meter Guanyin rising from the South China Sea.
