Long Feng Qipao
Jing'an, Shanghai
Shanghai's heritage qipao house since 1936, on the old-brand street where the Soong sisters once shopped.
Long Feng Qipao began in 1936, and its atelier on Shaanxi North Road - Shanghai's official heritage-brand street - still cuts by hand using the old methods: gui ba steam shaping, hand-stitched frog buttons, and silk brocades that feel like water. The Soong sisters wore Long Feng; the shop's most famous window dress is a replica of the gown Soong Mei-ling wore.\n\nMade-to-measure takes two to four weeks and a couple of fittings. Off-the-rack pieces are available for those who cannot wait. Bring a translator or use your phone - the tailors' enthusiasm transcends language.
Best for: A hand-made qipao from a 90-year-old Shanghai atelier.
