Tianzifang
Huangpu, Shanghai
A living maze of shikumen lanes packed with studios, tiny galleries, and cafes - Shanghai's bohemian heart.
Tianzifang is a warren of 1930s shikumen lane houses turned into hundreds of studios, galleries, and cafes. Unlike slicker developments, it is gloriously unplanned: you get lost, find a courtyard, climb a staircase, and stumble into a printmaker's studio.
Go in the late afternoon and wander without a map. Half the pleasure is not knowing where the lanes end.
Best for: Getting pleasantly lost in old Shanghai's lane houses.
