Tujia Brocade Workshop
Wulingyuan, Zhangjiajie
The rainbow-patterned brocade of the Tujia people, woven by hand in the mountains of Zhangjiajie since the Song dynasty.
Tujia brocade - xilankapu - is the woven identity of the Tujia people, a fabric of bold geometric patterns and rainbow colors that has decorated their mountain homes since the Song dynasty. In Zhangjiajie, workshops keep the craft alive on waist looms, and visitors can watch the weavers, learn the pattern language, and buy pieces that carry a whole culture's symbolism.
A scarf, wall hanging, or the traditional wedding fabric makes a genuinely one-of-a-kind souvenir, and the workshops' English-speaking staff explain the meaning behind each motif. It is the best cultural shopping stop in the Wulingyuan area.
Best for: The rainbow brocade of the Tujia people, loomed by hand.
