Zhangye Danxia
Zhangye, Zhangye
The rainbow mountains: striped cliffs of mineral color that look painted by a god with a grudge against minimalism.
The Zhangye Danxia landforms are a geological fever dream: bands of red, orange, yellow, and green striping a range of hills like a spilled palette. They are most alive at sunset, when the low light sets the colors on fire.
Entry is by shuttle between viewpoints; the fourth stop at sunset is the classic. This is a big-sky, wide-lens, once-in-a-lifetime landscape.
Best for: The rainbow mountains at golden hour.
