Conghua's springs have been the escape of choice since the 1950s, when the government built sanatoriums around them. Today a string of resorts terraces dozens of pools through bamboo and lychee groves, with the mountain air doing half the healing.

It is a full-day affair from Guangzhou: lunch at a farmhouse, an afternoon in the pools, dinner, then the train back. The mineral content is the real thing - locals swear by it.

Best for: Guangdong's original spa town, one hour from the city.
