How to Pay in China 2026: Alipay, WeChat Pay & Cards for Tourists

China runs on QR-code payments. Alipay and WeChat Pay now accept foreign Visa, Mastercard, and Amex cards - set them up at home and you can pay for nearly everything with your phone, from street food to high-speed rail.

Yes - foreigners can use Alipay and WeChat Pay in China. Download both at home, register with your international phone number, and link a Visa, Mastercard, or Amex. Purchases under about 200 yuan are fee-free; larger ones attract a roughly 3% card-processing fee. Carry 200-500 yuan in cash as backup for stalls and machines that only take cash. Set up Alipay before you fly

Download Alipay, register with your home phone number, and link a Visa, Mastercard, or Amex card - no Chinese bank account or phone number needed. Add WeChat Pay as the backup

Cards, cash, and ATMs

Most shops and restaurants do not accept Visa or Mastercard directly - they are set up for QR payments. The reliable pattern is: link your card to Alipay/WeChat and pay by QR. Keep 200-500 yuan in cash for backup (temple donation boxes, some rural stalls, and machines that only take cash). Metro, taxis, and high-speed rail

You need data for all of this

QR payments, DiDi, and map apps all need a connection - and Google Maps and WhatsApp are blocked on domestic networks without a VPN.
