China's oldest surviving library, built in 1561 - a scholar's garden of books, ponds, and quiet.

Tianyige ('Pavilion of the Sky') is the oldest private library in China, built by a Ming minister to house 70,000 volumes. The collection is gone - fire and war took their toll - but the garden architecture that protected it remains perfect.

It is more garden than library now: ponds, stone lions, and reading pavilions that have hosted scholars for 450 years. The peace is the exhibit.

Best for: Four hundred fifty years of scholar's quiet.
