Sea World Culture and Arts Center
Nanshan, Shenzhen
The V&A's Chinese outpost in Shekou - design galleries stacked in Pritzker-winner Maki's concrete terraces.
SWCAC opened in 2017 as a joint venture with London's Victoria and Albert Museum: a V&A gallery of design and craft, a theater, and a museum of Shenzhen's reform years, all wrapped in Fumihiko Maki's sculptural concrete terraces - the Pritzker winner's first building in China.
The building is free to wander; exhibitions are ticketed. It sits in the Sea World waterfront, where Shenzhen's expat crowd gathers around the old Minghua liner - see an exhibition, then stay for dinner and drinks along the water.
Best for: Shenzhen's design scene, on the water in the city's expat heart.
