Zhoucheng Tie-dye
Xizhou, Dali
Learn Bai tie-dye in the village where it has been made for 300 years - and take your own pattern home.
Zhoucheng is the tie-dye capital of the Bai people: indigo vats, string-wrapped cloth, and patterns of butterflies and peonies that have decorated Bai clothing for centuries. The village workshops welcome visitors, and for a few dozen yuan you can stitch, dip, and unwrap your own scarf.
The drying yards of indigo cloth are themselves worth the trip. Allow half a day and bring patience - the process is the souvenir.
Best for: Making your own indigo tie-dye with the Bai craftspeople of Zhoucheng.
