Seda Larung Gar
Ganzi, Ganzi
Thousands of red monastic houses climbing a valley wall - the most astonishing Tibetan Buddhist settlement on earth.
Larung Gar is a monastic city: 30,000 red wooden houses stacked up a hillside around the great golden institute. At dusk, with the valley lit from within, it looks like a place from another world.
Entry rules change frequently - check current visiting policy before you go, and be respectful: this is a working monastery, not a theme park. The drive from Ganzi town is a landscape in itself.
Best for: The red city on the hill that looks impossible.
