Longji ('dragon's backbone') is a mountainside staircase of rice terraces built over 700 years by the Zhuang and Yao peoples - thousands of steps of carved earth that catch the light like liquid gold at sunrise. The villages at the top are the real life of the place.
It is 2 hours from Guilin but worth an overnight: sleep in a farmhouse, wake for sunrise, and walk the high ridge trail between the two main viewpoints. Spring floods the terraces with mirror water; autumn turns them gold.
Best for: Seven centuries of terraces, caught in the first light.
