Moutai Town
Renhuai, Zunyi
The riverside town that distills China's most famous liquor, where the scent of fermenting baijiu hangs over the Long March ferry.
Moutai is the most valuable liquor brand on earth, and its hometown is a single dramatic town on the Chishui River: distillery after distillery, warehouses stacked with clay jars, and the whole valley permanently perfumed with the scent of fermenting grain. The town is also a Long March landmark - the Red Army crossed the river here, and the ferry site is preserved below the distilleries.
The official Moutai distillery offers tours and a tasting room, the riverside shops sell every grade of the liquor, and the nightly riverfront lights make the town photograph like a film set. Even nondrinkers find the visit fascinating - and the gift-shop haul is the most impressive souvenir in Guizhou.
Best for: The river town that makes the world's most valuable liquor.
