The quartzite pillars that inspired Avatar - one of the most surreal landscapes on earth.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a forest of hundreds of sandstone pillars rising hundreds of meters from a green valley - the place James Cameron's floating mountains were modeled on. Mist turns the view into a Chinese ink painting.

The park is vast. Ride the Bailong elevator up, walk the Yuanjiajie plateau, and take the cable car down. Two full days lets you see it without rushing.

Best for: The Avatar mountains, best seen in morning mist.
