Wang Xing Ji Fans
Shangcheng, Hangzhou
A 150-year-old workshop of hand-painted silk and sandalwood fans, the kind that appear in imperial dramas.
Wang Xing Ji has been making fans since 1875, and its Hefang Street shop still feels like a studio: shelves of silk and paper fans painted with landscapes, sandalwood folding fans that scent a whole room, and artisans visible at the back bench.
The signature black-paper fan - oiled, painted, and folded by hand - was once a scholar's status symbol and still makes the most elegant gift in Hangzhou. Prices start around a hundred yuan and climb to thousands for the collector's pieces. Staff will demonstrate the folding and painting if you ask.
Best for: Hand-painted silk fans from a 150-year-old workshop.
